Bowlers dream of Scottish title glory

All roads lead to Ayr next week as the Bowls Scotland national championsh­ips get underway with District Nine bowlers amongst hundreds competing for silverware.

Causewayea­d’s Jason Williams will line up in the singles against Stuart Harrigan (Inverness), Kippen’s Max Taylor plays John Breen (Greenfauld­s) in the senior singles while Arron Furzer (Polmaise) takes on Darren Swankie from the Arbroath club in the junior singles.

In the gents pairs Clackmanna­n’s Robert Allan and Stuart Wilson face Newton Stewart opposition and in the triples Patons’ Gordon McCallum, Billy Innes and Derek Wallace take on St Monans.

Causewayhe­ad four Harry McCulloch, Martin Flannaghan, Jim Dawson and Graham Walker will line up against Kirkliston, while in the senior fours contest Dunblane’s Bill Hardie, David Cuthil, Wallace Clarke, Donald Dawson play Wellington Park.

Alloa East End’s Pauline Thomson and Aaron Craig face the Aberchirde­r club in the opening mixed pairs match.

Ladies singles representa­tive Lauren Forgie (Bridge of Allan) faces Larbert’s Seona Black, Liz McKay (Cambus) plays Helen McVicar (Upper Cowal) in the senior singles while Eilidh Weir from Alloa East End lines up in the junior singles against Sarah Kennedy (Ardrossan).

Carrying the district’s hopes in the pairs are Jean Fisher and Rebecca Craig (Bridge of Allan) who will face Thurso opposition in their opening match.

Orwell’s Sandra Fullerton, Linda Reid and Maz Thorn play Stranraer in the triples while in the fours Alloa East End’s Aimmee Thomson, Gillian Kirk, Rebekah Weir and Eilidh Weir line up against the Stoneyetts club. In the senior fours Janice Hunter, Mary Miller, Moira Craig and Margaret Russell (Alloa East End) face Castle Kennedy opposition.

Kevin Wallace (Clackmanna­n) and Fraser Mathieson (Bridge of Allan) will play in the physically disabled category. DISTRICT LEAGUE

The District League final between Doune Castle and Causewayhe­ad goes ahead at Polmaise green on Friday.

In last week’s semi-finals the scores were: Borestone 11-19 Causewayhe­ad; Causewayhe­ad 18-17 Borestone; Bridge of Allan 15-17 Doune Castle; Doune Castle 23-3 Bridge of Allan.

Dunblane will play Causewayhe­ad while Doune Castle will take on Cambusbarr­on in the semi-finals of the City of Stirling Top Fifteen competitio­n tomorrow (Thursday). The event is being sponsored by Andrew Anderson and Sons and by J&W Builders Ltd.

CENTRAL STIRLING

Winners of the J&W Builders triples on Saturday were Jimmy Robertson, David Ross and Sandy Kerr. Runners up were Willie Nicol sen, Pat Neilson and Gary Malcolmson.

Losing semi-finalists were Ian Donald, Falconer Mitchell and Hugh Letford along with Richard Kelly, Archie Young and John Barrie.

DUNBLANE

The annual four-bowl pairs (Aussie rules) were played in glorious sunshine last Saturday. After the initial round-robin stages were completed the finalists were Sheena Finnie and Alex Oliver against Steven Morrison and Gavin Bruce with Sheena and Alex winning 3-2.

Dunblane is delighted to have the senior rink of David Cuthell, Wallace Clarke, Bill Hardie and Donald Dawson representi­ng the club at Ayr next week in the naional championsh­ips.
