Cheers as microbrewers taste success

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

Stirling MP Stephen Kerr met with Kippen-based Fallen Brewery owners Paul and Karen Fallen to discuss the UK microbrewing industry, Fallen Brewery’s success and the opportunities and challenges facing the sector.

Microbrewing is enjoying a boom in recent years.

In just five years the number of microbrewers in the UK has risen 64 per cent, and locally owned taprooms across the country are selling their own products over the bar.

Established in 2014, Fallen Brewery is based in Kippen, where they create beer for the UK pubs market from the former site of Kippen railway station. Their products are also sold in Holland and Italy.

The UK Government provides a 50 per cent discount on duty for small brewers.

Fallen Brewery recently teamed with retailers Aldi to bring two new craft beers to the shelves of its Scottish stores - Wanganui, a Kiwi Pale Ale, and Gose Train, a German style sour wheat beer.

Wanganui is brewed with kiwi fruit and Huell melon and Taiheke hops to give aromas of ripe apple and kiwi fruit flavours, while Gose Train is brewed with Montueka coriander seeds and salt for a softer citrus and honey taste.

The beers join Aldi’s craft beer range, which currently includes Fallen Brewing’s Just the Ticket and Grapevine.

Mr Kerr said:“I was delighted to hear about the success of this brewery. Fallen is a great example of a successful small business that is providing a quality product in this popular market.

“I support the 50 per cent discount on duty for small brewers but there is much more we can do for the beer industry, especially our pubs. It was great to visit yet another successful, vibrant entrepreneurial enterprise in the Stirling area.”

Fallen Brewery managing director Paul Fallen said:“At Fallen Brewing, we love to experiment. We’ve got a great feeling about not only introducing a brand new Kiwi Pale ale to the market, but developing‘Gose’, a softer, less dry style of sour beer, catering to the thriving sour beer trend.

Fallen Brewing Wanganui and Gose Train are available now until September in Aldi stores across Scotland.
