Is not for faint-hearted

Over 300 entries for ‘wilderness obstacle’event

- Robert Fairnie

A 60ft log suspended over a murky pond is among the challenges set to face adventure seekers at this weekend’s Lanrick Challenge.

The event is taking place for a fifth year on the stunning Lanrick estate near Doune this Saturday – with more than 300 people signed up to take part.

The challenge, described as a wilderness obstacle event, will see participants take on a variety of tests across 6k and 12k courses with logs, ditches, burns and bogs all set to feature.

There will be around 50 obstacles in the main event and the challenge is open to people of all abilities and fitness levels – with opportunities to run, jog or walk.

A mini mud run will also take place for those aged five to 12 with a range of obstacles tailored to younger participants.

And new this year will be a magical fairy garden for children aged three to eight – complete with net crawls, bale climbs, a balancing pole, hula-hoops and Space Hoppers.

Organiser Penny Dickson said: “We’re looking forward to the event. We hope it’s nice but I think you need a bit of mud and rain really.

“The entries have been going really well and there’s well over 300 people signed up already. There are also a lot of kids entries which is a positive.”

This year funds will be raised for the Sandpiper Trust and Scottish Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) through the event.

Down the years the event has raised more than £50,000 for charitable causes.

The Sandpiper Trust was set up by organisers Penny and Aly Dickson in memory of their son Sandy who died in a drowning accident in 2000 aged 14. They aim to improve emergency care in remote areas while supplying medical teams with life-saving equipment.

Prior to the events taking part on Saturday all participants will go through a special warm up with features some CPR training. This will be led by mountain rescue teams, doctors and paramedics.

Penny added: “This is a really important part of the day for us – and there will be professionals there to help out.”

Food and drink will be available on the site.
