Seniors outsmart young pretenders

Challenge match produces some great play

- Donald Morton

Age and experience proved to be the winner as Bridge of Allan Sports Club’s seniors held off a determined bid by the juniors to claim bragging rights in chalking up an 18-11 victory in a challenge match.

The clash was organised by head coach Jane Martin as a fun way of bringing everyone who attends her coaching courses together in a fun afternoon - lit up by some memorable Christmas sweaters which also had a slight competitive edge to it.

The former World No 8 and England international was delighted with the outcome that also further underlined the squash boom currently being experienced at Minewood Pavilion.

Jane said: “The Fun Senior v Junior Christmas Challenge was something I thought about a couple of months ago and it was aimed at involving family members who have supported me and the club for a long period of time.

“It was tough going trying to match players up but it all came together in the end and I was delighted with the turn out we had, with a total number of 28 players taking part and 29 matches played in a great spirit.

“On the day the old heads proved just too strong, but everyone had a lovely afternoon and the atmosphere was great, with a lot of individuals turning up in Christmas outfits and all having a fun time.”

And Jane reckons the young players have a bright future, adding: “You never know, with another year under their belts the juniors may get their revenge in the 2017 Christmas Challenge!” Meanwhile, several of the club’s top junior talents are gearing up for the Scottish Junior Open in Edinburgh this weekend.

Scotland under-17 boys’ internationalist James Dougan will spearhead the bid for glory, with Kyle Penman hoping his challenge in the under-12s will benefit from his debut season with the Minewood Men’s third team.

Duncan Heggarty, Felix Wood and Oliver Hunter are all tipped for great things in their age groups as the cream of Bridge of Allan’s crop get ready to go headto-head with some of the globe’s top juniors.
