Marc – that scoreline flattered us

- David Ogilvie

Marc McKenzie scored his fifth goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Linlithgow Rose in the Scottish Cup at Prestonfield but admits the scoreline flattered Stirling Albion.

The summer signing from Elgin said: “I was worried for the full game, to be honest.

“They had the majority of the game – if you look at the stats I’m sure they had a lot more shots and they had umpteen corner-kicks. the boys were saying it was quite bobbly and soft underneath.

“It might have been a different story at our place but it was a tight park and we didn’t get the width we wanted. They crammed the midfield and had the extra man in there so we changed things a wee bit in the second half.

“We knew it would be difficult because Todd Lumsden has got them working for him. We found it hard to get to grips with their formation in the first half but I was delighted with the three goals we scored and it’s another clean sheet.

“Ross McMillan was different class and that’s three games in a row that we haven’t conceded a goal. The boys are in a good place at the moment – they are confident. There needs to be that desire not to lose goals and that’s something we have managed to do.

“We took our chances and Ross Kavanagh was unlucky not to score as well. He looked sharp when he came on and it was a great save from Darren Hill.”

Albion’s match on Saturday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) at Montrose has been brought forward to 1pm.

“It was always going to be a hard game because they were looking to take a scalp but the most important thing is that we are through to the next round.

“One-nil is never a great lead so when I scored the second goal it eased a bit of the pressure.

“Looking at Linlithgow, they have played better than some of the teams against us in League 2 this season and they had a lot of ex-Stirling boys wanting to do well against their old club.

“It’s a great result and that’s all that matters in the cup but we didn’t play anywhere near the level we can and that’s the first thing the boys said in the changing room after the game. However, we defended well and big Wally (Chris Smith) made some crucial saves.”

McKenzie feels caretaker boss Martyn Corrigan has done enough since replacing Stuart McLaren to be handed the job on a permanent basis.

The 31 year-old added: “That’s three clean sheets in a row since Martyn took over so hopefully that does him favour and the chairman and the board look at it.

“I think you can see the boys are behind him – after the goals we were going up to him to celebrate with him.

“It’s not up to us what happens but Marty has done a great job since Stuart left – training has been great and the boys are buzzing. It’s a good win to take into the Clyde game on Saturday.”
