Bin chaos health fear

-

delays in collections and confusion over when bins should be put out for emptying.

Residents at Allan Park House believe the problems may be down to binmen not being aware of the location of their bin store, where some of the rubbish is kept.

But they say they have never experienced any problems like this before and have been using the bin store for many years.

George Harrow, 84, lives in one of the 27 flats at the complex and he has been storing bags of rubbish in a cupboard, waiting for the bins to be emptied.

Staff say some residents have been unable to recycle due to the lack of room in some bins and have just been putting their rubbish wherever there is room.

George said: “It’s just terrible. I’m going to keep recycling but there’s no space downstairs so I’ll just keep everything here until they are emptied.

“It’s been five weeks so the bin men should have been here well before now. We have been phoning them about it but they still haven’t emptied them. It’s not good enough.”

Another frustrated tenant, Margaret Brackall, said: “The council have been contacted a number of times about this and we have actually written to them ourselves. This has become a health hazard.

“The previous system worked perfectly well and there were never any issues with it. Why did they have to go and change it?”

Neighbour Sadie Cameron said: “Everyone is talking about this and nobody is happy. The bins are just overflowing. Many of us are having to keep our rubbish in our flats. It is now an environmental health issue.

“I’ve heard that it’s not just us having difficulty with this but that this is happening elsewhere too.”

A staff member added: “These people pay their council tax and are entitled to this service just like everyone else. To hear that they are keeping bags of rubbish in their flats is a big concern.

“They don’t even have a set of bins each as there are around a dozen for 27 flats, which makes things a bit worse when it comes to space.”
