Dunvant make a move as they take over at summit

BOWLERS managed to beat the wet weather at the weekend in the Swansea Bowling League.

It was a reduced programme as Coedgwilym were playing in the Carruthers Shield.

There was one midweek game when Coedgwilym entertaine­d Sketty Church, and the hosts recorded a comfortabl­e 76-38 victory, picking up a maximum 11 points with one going to the visitors.

Top rink for Coedgwilym was Peter Bolch, Clive Davies, Billy Potter and skip Leighton Voyle, who defeated Richard Clarke’s rink 30-5.

Other rink scores: Bob Penn 29-17 Paul Evans, Phill Jones 17-16.

The weekend matches were played in cold and showery weather, but all were completed.

Second-placed Dunvant faced a difficult fixture when they visited Sketty Church, but they came away with a convincing 73-44, winning the points 11-1.

All the visitors’ rinks were successful with Dai Rees, Paul Rees and Andrew Jones defeating Steven Griffiths, Mark Barnard and Graham Clarke 22-18, 23-12 and 28-14 respective­ly.

Dunvant, who won the title last season, now head the table with 49 points. Bonymaen are second on 46, but have played a game more.

Dyfatty were back in action after a twoweek break when they hosted Victoria Saints, and gained a comprehens­ive 76-41 victory to take the match points 10-1.

Top rink for Dyfatty was Kevin Thomas, Graham Searle, Len Cramner and skip Robin Thomas, who defeated the rink skipped by Simon Davies 32-12.

Elsewhere, Russell Smith beat Damian Devois 19-13 and Brian Thomas defeated Kai Higgins 25-16.

Jersey entertaine­d Oystermout­h recorded a 66-44 victory, picking up nine points. The visitors took three.

The rink of Phil Bell, James Wood, Jack Brown and skip Rhodri Johnson enjoyed an excellent match as they beat Dave Roberts 25-8.

Edward Johnson won 25-16 against Alan Waters and Willie Shannon went down 20-16 to Rob Trick.

The pick of the matches in division two saw first take on second when Morriston United visited Parc Llewellyn. And the home team won a crucial match with a convincing 74-40 score.

They picked up nine points, with the visitors collecting three.

The hosts had two big wins with the rinks skipped by Neil Maclean and Don Batcup defeating Alan Rees and Lyndon Havard 28-7 and 29-13 respective­ly.

Morriston’s sole success was the rink skipped by Steve Beddoe, who got the better of Ian Lewis 20-17.

Clyne Valley entertaine­d Waunarlwyd­d and secured a 61-44 win to take the points 9-3.

The rink of Graham Reynolds, Peter

King, Bill Buse and Barrie Rees were Clyne’s match-winners with a 25-6 success over Keith Hunter.

Roland Page edged out David Cooper 20-19 and Roy Lang lost 19-16 to Bob Eaton.

Tawe played Hafod at Primrose Park and they secured a solid 64-43 success to take the points 11-1.

Rink scores: Paul Richards 24-10 Gordon Grey, John Warwick 22-18 Jeff Mcallen, Steve Price 18-15 Norman Burgess.

The two bottom clubs met when Mumbles hosted St Thomas and after a close encounter the away team recorded their first victory of the season with a 59-57 scoreline. They took the match points 9-3.

Rink scores: Brian Fuller 19-23 Gordon Whitehouse, Nigel Richards 16-20 Neil Crocker, Jim Forrest 22-16 Dan Clement.

Meanwhile, Coedgwilym – Swansea’s sole representa­tives in the Carruthers Shield – hosted Ogmore Vale in the first round and went through 84-74.
