James: It’s a privilege to play with idol Mata

-

DANIEL James has revealed his four footballing icons – including one he is currently playing with.

James made the move from Swansea City to Manchester United last summer in a transfer deal that could eventually be worth £18million.

His stunning displays for Swansea under Graham Potter last term made him a much sought-after prospect, and when United came calling it was inevitable that the winger would move up to the Premier League.

His impact with the Red Devils has been impressive. Having initially been signed as a player for the future, he has featured regularly under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.

So far this campaign he has played 42 games, with his 37 appearances for United coming alongside five matches for Wales.

One particular player, though, made him particularly welcome when he arrived from the Liberty last June. And that is Juan Mata.

Asked about his footballing idols growing up, James said: “I’ve got quite a few.

“I think everyone looks up to (Lionel) Messi, but I think I’ve got to go Juan as someone I always looked up to and to play with him now is surreal for me.

“(Eden) Hazard is one, Thierry Henry, unbelievable. So yeah, I’d go them.”

Around the same time as James moved to Old Trafford, he suffered the loss of his father, putting Mata’s words of comfort into even better focus.

Pressed further on the Spaniard’s inclusion amongst his footballing greats, James added: “I think just what he did, so graceful on the pitch and I remember I got one of his shirts, Europa League shirts, when he won it at Chelsea.

“He is just someone who I always looked up to.

“To play in the same team is just surreal for me.

“I think when I first met him it was just a bit weird.

“Growing up as a kid, looking up to someone and then end up playing with them.

“Not just being great on the pitch, but off the pitch as well, someone that obviously inspires me a lot.

“I think when I first met him he came and sat next to me in the changing room and he said ‘I know it is a big move for you, if you need anything here is my number.

“If you ever need a message, or someone to talk to I’ll be here’.

“That was great for me.”
