Three crashes in a week at ‘danger’ road junction
A HUGE steam locomotive was delayed on its way to South Wales because of a broken down train.
The 60163 Tornado train was due to travel along the London mainline as part of a Christmas trip.
But a train that broke down at Severn Tunnel Junction caused delays of up to an hour.
Although the train looks like something from the last century, it was actually
RESIDENTS have raised concerns over the safety of a Cardiff road junction after a number of accidents in recent weeks.
Concerned locals say the junction on Glyncoed Road, off Pentwyn Drive, doesn’t have clear road markings or Give Way signs.
Pentwyn residents say they are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of accidents after three occurred in the space of a week.
Councillor Joe Carter, who represents the Pentwyn ward, has set up a petition online. More than 800 people have signed it since it launched about two weeks ago.
He said: “The junction is becoming completed in 2008, making it the first steam train to be be built in the UK since 1960.
The train left from London Paddington at 7.14am and had been due to arrive at Cardiff Central at 12.58pm.
The trip was part of a Christmas shopping day out with hundreds of people onboard. Mulled wine and mince pies were served to first and standard class passengers. very dangerous as there are no clear road marking signs or no Give Way signs. Residents are becoming increasingly worried too as there were three accidents there in a week recently.
“It might not be such an issue for those that live there as they are used to it, but for anyone passing through the area or anyone that isn’t familiar with it it can be a big issue.
“Residents just want the council to implement some clear road signs or a roundabout.
“They’re concerned.”
Cllr Carter believes the number of people who have signed the petition shows how strongly residents feel about the issue.
He added: “Loads of people signed the petition and it galvanized the locals. The road markings would come becoming increasingly at such a small cost for the council and the money it could save the NHS and the police force from potential crashes could be huge.”
Commenting on the petition, Adele Cox said: “I have had so many nearmisses on this junction because of people thinking they can make it out when you’re coming down the hill.”
Sarah Stevens wrote: “The junction is a fatality waiting to happen.”
Judith Heard added: “I’m signing because there have been too many accidents at this junction and I don’t feel safe when driving through here.”
Domini Tansey also said: “My husband was involved in an accident there a number of years ago and the situation just seems to be getting worse, with minor bumps escalating into the more serious incident of this week.
“Definitely time for traffic-calming measures.”
A spokesman for Cardiff council said: “The council has investigated the road safety concerns at this location and there is justification for improvements to be made when funding is available.
“Using the budgets available, the council has to prioritise which roads and junctions require investment the most, which takes into account a number of factors including traffic and pedestrian flows, injury collisions over a five-year period, traffic speed, road layout, as well as the impact that a delay in implementation could cause.
“The proposed improvement works to this junction are logged on the future programme and will be implemented when finances become available.”
