CELEBRATIONS Family welcomes fifth generation as baby Eva arrives

THE birth of a child is a cause for celebration in any family – but this family’s latest arrival marked a particularly special milestone.

Three-week-old Eva Rose Jones’ birth has established five living generations of women in her family.

She met her great-great-grandmother 95-year-old Dolly Debono a week after her birth along with her grandmother Deborah Swain and her great-grandmother Sandra Hewett.

Dolly was the only member of the family who predicted her great-grandaughter Rachel Jones, 32, would be having a girl.

Sandra said Dolly was delighted to meet the new arrival at Lakeside House nursing home on Wedal Road.

“She loves her,” Sandra, 74, said. “We were all convinced she would be having a boy but she was convinced it was a girl and she was right.”

Rachel Jones gave birth to Eva on Friday, August 18, at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The 32-year-old pharmacist from St Fagans said she was touched when her great-grandmother was finally able to meet her daughter.

“She was looking forward to seeing her,” she said. “She just held her arms out and she was just beaming.

“It was lovely and I felt a bit emotional. We were hoping my nana would be there to see her and now in years to come we can show her photos.”

Rachel added that Eva was so well behaved at the nursing home she would be back again to visit Dolly soon.

Dolly was born on November 29, 1922, just a fortnight after the BBC began broadcasting a radio service from London and Birmingham.

Ninety-five years later, her greatgreat-grandaughter Eva was born on the same week Nasa’s space probe Cassini entered the final month of its mission orbiting the gas giant Saturn.

Rachel said: “We found it quite amazing that we have five generations. You don’t see it that often because people pass and she has got to a ripe old age my grandmother.”

She added that Dolly was still in good health and “not going anywhere any time soon”.
