Dawn rises to occasion with a winning haul at Merthyr match

DAWN Jones turned in a strong performanc­e to win the Merthyr Tydfil AA Ladies Match on Penywern Top Pond with a 22lb 9oz mixture of carp, roach and tench.

Well behind with 7lb in second place was Kath Brown, while Janice Farr weighed in 3lb 11oz for third place.

Pole tactics won the Festival AC match for Damian Scrivens when he fished at Ebbw Vale’s Festival Lake. His 13lb 9oz of roach, carp and bream beat Larry Salter with 12lb 12oz and Dennis O’Leary with 11lb 2oz.

Pontllanfr­aith tackle dealer Howard Green was back at number one in the latest Wednesday open match at Redhill Fishery.

This week, Penny’s Pond was pegged and Green pole fished pellets close to the margins to catch 132lb 9oz of carp.

Adam Jones, from Cefn Hengoed, kept up his good run with 130lb 13oz and Gordon Perry was third with 93lb 12oz.

Austin Roberts, from Whitchurch, followed up his Glamorgan AC match win a week before by taking first place in the Over-50s match at Cefn Mably Lakes with 82lb 6oz.

Steve Jones made second place with 64lb 6oz, while Cardiff Nomads member Steve Deacon was third with 60lb.

Ebbw Vale angler Dennis O’Leary wins the silver fish pool most weeks and this time did it with 12lb of roach and bream.

After finishing second in a tough Cardiff Nomads Tuesday evening match on the embankment section of the River Taff , Clive Branson goes into next week’s final fixture with a fourpoint lead.

He needed just 15oz while winner Andy Thomas caught 1lb 8oz of small roach and perch and Clive Roberts was third with 10oz. Match organiser Norman Sterry was the winner of the Saturday open at Mathern Mill.

He used pellet baits with pole and leger tackle to net 15 carp with a total weight of 125lb 1oz.

Sirhowy AS member Chris Byard caught 122lb 12oz of carp for second place and Jason Hale was third with 119lb 14oz.

The Sunday open at White Springs was on the Match Lake and won by Chris Wells with 78lb 9oz of carp and bream from peg 12. His next peg neighbour Dan Bowen was runner-up with 68lb 10oz and Andrew Wray third with 56lb.

The final match in the New City Anglers Summer League at Lliswerry Pond was won by Dave Wells who float fished prawns from a peg on the field side and made up his 33lb 9oz with nine tench to 5lb and one bream. Two tench and a few roach on maggots and casters put Steve Cowhen in second place with 8lb 10oz and one tench weighing 4lb 2oz gave third prize to Richard Luffman.

Steve Hughes won the league with an aggregate of 93lb 5oz; runner-up Dave Wells had 88lb 12oz and Sean Jordan was third with 50lb 4oz.

A run of carp in the final hour clinched victory for Dean Jay when the Dinas Powys angler was in the Glamorgan AC line-up at Cefn Mably Lakes. His 86lb 8oz put him well clear of John Cox, from Bridgend, in second place with 62lb 8oz and Whitchurch member Austin Roberts third with 41lb.

Jim Palmer, from Rhiwbina, took the silver fish pool with 5lb of roach.

Four big bream boosted Gordon Abbott’s catch of crucians and small stock carp to a winning 67lb in the Sunday open at Holgan Farm where the nearest rivals were Thomas Keyhoe with 58lb and Nathan Thompson with 51lb.

Pole-fishing pellets to the island in the New Canal was Sean Wilson’s winning tactics when Sirhowy AS visited White Springs. The Trethomas angler caught 85lb 8oz of carp and was followed by Nigel Morris with 69lb 2oz and the 61lb 6oz from Newport member Phil Weaver, who now has over 50 points lead in the club champion table.

It was bream all the way in the Iffers AC match at Hartleton Lake where Mike Mould had the winning 34lb 15oz in his keepnet after using maggots with a method feeder. Mark Annis used a groundbait feeder for the second-best weight of 22lb 12oz and Alan Simmonds was third with 21lb 8oz.

Merthyr-based members pocketed all the prize money when Aberglais AC headed into Herefordsh­ire for a match at Pixley Pool.

Winner Ian Cathrew pole-fished close to the bank with sweetcorn on the hook and put 80lb 3oz of carp in his net; Frank Davies, on the opposite side of the pool, was second with 78lb 13oz and Brian Prothero third with 76lb 1oz.

Members of Cefn Fforest AC found hungry carp waiting for them in the lake at Staunton Court near Gloucester and there were a number of catches weighing over 100lb led by Mark Hillier’s 187lb haul on pole and pellets.

The second-best catch was Zac Williams’s 172lb followed by 168lb from Ray McDonnell.

Phil Thomas, from Cross Keys, won again when Pontymiste­r AC paid a visit to Grange Springs at Trellech.

He pole-fished pellets and maggots for a 52lb mixture or roach, bream, tench and carp that saw off Tim Jones with 48lb 1oz.
