At times of uncertainty, it’s good to talk

-

Recent events in global politics, central bank policies, trade disputes and climate change, as well as Brexit and a potential change of government, have provided the ingredients for an uncertain future for investment markets.

Ultimately, carefully constructed portfolios should be in a good position to weather any short-term turbulence. Christopher Godfrey-Faussett, Managing Director at Close Brothers Asset Management, briefly explains protecting wealth and why it’s good to have someone to talk to in uncertain times

What can you do to protect your wealth?

At Close Brothers, we are careful to ensure that our clients’ portfolios are as insulated as possible from the effects of a shifting political and economic environment. Ideally, we don’t want people to have to make changes to their portfolio at short-notice in response to events. Part of this is ensuring that client portfolios are sufficiently diversified, and that they include an appropriate level of defensive investments – this is where high-quality investment management can really show its worth. At the same time, we are aware that for some clients, short-term volatility does pose a risk. Our flexible approach in these circumstances helps protect their investments.

When it comes to investing, what is really dangerous is trying to second guess what’s going to happen in the markets. The key to achieving your investment goals is your time in the market, not timing the market. Even if you managed to pull your money out of investments at the right time, it is very difficult to then re-enter the market at the bottom, unless you have a crystal ball.

Giving you confidence through clarity

At times of political and economic uncertainty, understanding how your portfolio is invested and where the risks lie will provide reassurance. It is important that clients know they can call any time to discuss their portfolio. This is why we are so passionate about the accessibility of our investment managers at Close Brothers. The individual making investment decisions is the same person you can talk to on a daily basis, who understands your unique circumstances and financial requirements. We know that these conversations are important to provide perspective, so that you can be certain action is being taken during difficult periods.

It’s always good to talk!
