CANNES GEMS HEIST
Jewels worth thousands stolen from Jodie’s hotel – including mum’s ring
DRIPPING in jewels and a white encrusted gown, Jodie Turner-Smith made quite the entrance at the Cannes Film Festival.
But her debut appearance didn’t only catch the eyes of the photographers – burglars made off with thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from the British actress’s hotel suite.
In the latest high-profile theft to hit the festival, the thieves stole several pieces – including her mother’s wedding ring – while the star was having breakfast on Friday.
It is thought they were after the gold and diamond gems which she had shown off on the red carpet the night before.
But the jewels, which Miss TurnerSmith wore to the premiere of her film After Yang, had been lent by Gucci and had already been returned.
The 34-year-old, who played the title role in Channel 5’s recent miniseries Anne Boleyn, had been staying at the Marriott hotel with her one-year-old daughter Janie.
According to local newspaper NiceMatin, there was no sign of forced entry to their suite, which is opened using a magnetic key card.
Although no one was in the room at the time of the theft, the actress is thought to have switched hotels and increased her private security.
‘Spent 2.5 hours in the police station’
Posting on Twitter, she revealed that she had spent her last day at the annual festival reporting the crime.
‘Didn’t think I would be spending 2.5 hours in the police station on my final day in Cannes, but here we are,’ she wrote on Sunday.
However, Miss Turner-Smith – who is married to Dawson’s Creek actor Joshua Jackson – didn’t let the breakin dampen her spirits as she attended the Kering Women in Motion Awards later that evening.
The event saw Miss Turner-Smith wear a shimmering purple and black Gucci gown as well as a diamond and emerald necklace and earrings.
Police in Cannes are understood to be investigating the theft, with the full co-operation of the Marriott. The hotel said that it would help with police inquiries, adding: ‘The security of our guests is our top priority.’
