THEY play newlyweds in the latest adaptation of Daphne e du Maurier’s novel Rebecca.

The Netflix film, set on the e French Riviera, involves Lilyy James and Armie Hammer in a number of steamy embraces.

And the chemistry between the pair r is said to have been helped by the e close friendship they formed on set.

Such was their bond that some film m crew thought Miss James – who was s pictured canoodling with married d actor Dominic West two weeks ago – and US heart-throb Hammer, 34, , were an item. Staff said the pair r ‘spent a lot of time together in the e evenings and at weekends’ once film- ing began in June 2019.

his two children, while Miss James, 31 1 was still in a five-year relationship p with former Doctor Who actor Matt t Smith, 37. Hammer announced three e months ago that his ten-year marriage e had ended. Miss James’s representa- tives declined to comment last night.

In a previous interview, she said she enjoyed filming in the South of France. ‘It was totally magical. We met each other, we shot by the beach, we could drink rosé every evening. It was heaven,’ she said. Miss James’s relationship with Smith is understood to have cooled while she was filming Rebecca. They reportedly tried but failed to rekindle their relationship during lockdown.

In July she was seen sharing ice cream in a London park with Captain America actor Chris Evans, 39. Two weeks ago, Miss James and West, 51, were photographed in Rome after spending weeks together filming for the BBC adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit Of Love.

They were seen riding a scooter together and being extremely affectionate at lunch. On day that the pictures emerged, West and his wife Catherine FitzGerald, who have four children, put on an awkward display of solidarity outside their Wiltshire home. West put up a handwritten note reading: ‘Our marriage is strong and we’re very much still together.’ Miss James is rumoured to have reassured Miss FitzGerald that there is nothing going on between her and West.

In an interview with The Guardian on Saturday, Miss James said she spent the summer reading poetry and watching films.

Asked if she spent the time alone, she replied: ‘No comment.’
