11.15pm: ‘Fit’ postie texts his partner to tell her: I love you 11.45pm: He dies of suspected Covid-19

- By Claire Elliot

A POSTMAN sent a heartbreaking message to his partner half an hour before he died from coronavirus.

Alexander ‘Akie’ Fenty, a ‘strong, fit and healthy’ 45-year-old, had a cough and difficulty breathing.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Sunday but sent home after two hours. When his breathing became worse, his partner called an ambulance.

Mr Fenty later died in hospital.

His partner Lisa Masson, 46, and daughter Abby, 15, have not been tested for the virus but are in self-isolation at the family home in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

Miss Masson said: ‘He sent me a text about 11.15pm saying, “I love you, this is f ****** crazy”. Then I got a call [at midnight] saying he passed away at quarter to 12. I didn’t believe it.

‘They didn’t test him [for coronavirus] but said they are 100 per cent sure that’s what he had. On his death certificate it says “presumed Covid-19”. I still can’t believe how it could happen... he was strong, fit and healthy.

‘I want people to understand how serious this is. It’s not just a cold or flu.’

Mr Fenty, a postman for 19 years, developed flu-like symptoms, including a cough, in December. He was given antibiotics and had been off work for the past two weeks. Miss Masson said: ‘He was lulling about and coughing. But he didn’t have a temperature and he didn’t have a sore throat.’

Miss Masson, a home care responder, called 111 and was told to take him to hospital. Hours later, he died.

She said: ‘Everyone thought highly of him. He was absolutely devoted to our Abby and to me. He was such a family man.’

NHS Grampian said that it would not comment on individual patients.

SCOTS are being urged to respect distancing rules and stop approaching postmen.

Craig Anderson, of the Communication Workers Union, said: ‘It’s a health risk to them and the public.’
