McTominay a doubt for Scots after knee injury

- By CHRIS WHEELER

SCOTT McTOMINAY’S season could be over after the Scotland midfielder suffered suspected knee ligament damage in Manchester United’s win over Newcastle yesterday. The 23-year-old was pictured leaving Old Trafford on crutches after the match and is now a serious doubt for the Euro 2020 play-offs in March. ‘He’s probably done the ligament in his knee,’ said United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. ‘I don’t know how bad it is, let’s see. We’ve seen him heal quickly before.’ Anthony Martial’s brace bookended a thumping comeback triumph as United got back to winning ways in style. Sunday’s defeat at Watford was chastening for the Red Devils, but Solskjaer’s side bounced back from that — and Matty Longstaff’s opener — to seal a victory thanks to Martial goals either side of efforts from Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford. Longstaff scored the winner on a dream top-flight debut against Solskjaer’s men in October and was able to open the scoring at Old Trafford, extending a club-record run without a Premier League clean sheet to a 14th match. Yet that soft underbelly did not cost United this time as Martial struck a quickfire leveller, which 18-year-old Greenwood added to before Rashford headed home a third as half-time approached. An undercooked back pass from Sean Longstaff allowed Martial to add another early in a second period in which the France forward hit the post and saw the half-time introduction of Paul Pogba, who stepped up his return from an ankle injury. Solskjaer added: ‘The players bounced back really well today.’
