Specially trained spaniel Mac to rescue casualties in global disaster zones Ready for action: His doggie kit
SPORTING his very own pair of protective goggles as well as flameproof bootees, he is ready to take an emergency rescue mission in his stride. Springer spaniel Mac has been specially trained by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to go into collapsed buildings to search for trapped casualties. The three-year-old and a tenyear-old companion Diesel, also a springer spaniel, are based in Aberdeenshire.
But thanks to their invaluable skills, they could be sent on international missions in disaster zones.
Mac, who is originally from Suffolk, was taken to Portlethen, Kincardineshire, at just eight weeks old to start his training. His handler, Gary Carroll, 48, said that Mac’s agility enables him to enter unstable buildings without the risk of triggering further damage.
The dog is trained to pick up the scent of a person breathing, as well as listening for shouts for help.
Mr Carroll said: ‘He can enter areas where there are a lot of rocks and slabs. He can even enter unsteady buildings.
‘This is because of his weight. He doesn’t cause what we call a secondary collapse.
‘He can cover areas a lot more safely than firefighters can and not disturb as much debris.
‘I went for this type of breed because of its size. If I have to lift him into an area, he is light. He can also fit into small holes, too.’
Mr Carroll trained Mac at home, with the help of his wife, Marianne. She would hide, so that the spaniel could then practise finding her.
He said Mac thinks it is ‘all a game’ – adding that it was a ‘proud moment’ when the dog qualified in July.
Mr Carroll explained: ‘He looks for casualties by using his nose. If the person is unconscious, the best thing we have is the dog’s nose because he can smell that person breathing.
‘He will pick anyone shouting for help or someone unconscious.’
