OK we get it, Meryl ... you’re a Hillary fan
WHOOPING loudly and punching the air – while proudly wearing a stars and stripes dress – Meryl Streep made her support for Hillary Clinton clear.
The Hollywood star – who has played Margaret Thatcher and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst – urged Americans to vote for their first female president in a speech at the Democratic National Convention.
As Mrs Clinton made history by becoming the first woman to be nominated as a major party’s presidential candidate, Miss Streep, 67, told delegates at the event in Philadelphia on Tuesday night: ‘What does it take to be the first female anything? It takes grit, and it takes grace.’
Pictures of the Oscar-winning star’s enthusiastic support for Mrs Clinton, 68, have been widely shared on the internet, with some jokingly captioning them to express everyday joys such as ‘the waiter bringing your food’.
Miss Streep, who played Mrs Thatcher in 2011 film The Iron Lady and Mrs Pankhurst in Suffragette last year, said: ‘Nearly 100 years after women got the vote, you people have made history. And you’re going to make history again in November because Hillary Clinton will be our first woman president, and she will be a great president.’ The star also compared Mrs Clinton to female trailblazers including Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to serve in George Washington’s army during the American Revolution.
Mrs Clinton’s husband Bill also spoke at the event, trying to show his wife’s warm side by describing their life together. But the former president was accused of ‘airbrushing’ his speech by making no mention of his affairs.
Mrs Clinton’s rival, Republican Donald Trump, yesterday insisted he would love to see a woman president, but added: ‘It would be bad for women if it were Hillary Clinton.’
