Sleep like a log... in the £500 a night tree house

- By Mike Merritt

THINK of a tree house and the first thing you imagine is a ramshackle hut perched precariously on a branch.

So those spending the night in the tree-top home at Fernie Castle could be forgiven for questioning the £500-a-night bill.

But this is no ordinary tree house, as the king-size bed, three balconies and flat-screen TV will attest.

In fact, the fairytale suite has been named among the best tree houses in the country.

The structure, in the grounds of the castle at Letham near Cupar, Fife, is built in a cluster of sycamore trees and came second on a list compiled by Wanderlust travel magazine.

The travel guide said: ‘A stay at Fernie Castle’s tree house is like stepping into a fairytale. That’s not just because of its turreted roof and its high position among the foliage, but also because of the decor – fairies and mythical creatures are painted on the walls.’

Castle owner and laird, Neil Blackburn of Fernie, said: ‘It has proved very popular – especially for romantic getaways – with honeymooners and those wanting to propose. We’ve had a few of those.

‘We built it five years ago and it has been very busy – people love the ambience and romantic setting.’

The price of staying in the tree house includes a bottle of champagne, beers, soft drinks, chocolates, fresh fruit basket, cheeseboard, biscuits, continental breakfast and a four-course dinner at the castle.

First on Wanderlust’s list was The Treehouse at Harptree Court, Somerset, which sleeps two people and is near the Mendip Hills.
