PAY-PER-VIEW MOVIE

CUTE and appealing British indie comedy in which Carter (Charlie Cox) suffers a ‘trinity of misery’ — he is homeless, unemployed and single. So, is tracking down his ex the best way for him to move on?

SCI-FI ACTION Pacific Rim, 8pm, Sky Action

BRITS Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba (pictured) may top the cast, but they’re overshadowed by a bunch of Transformers-style sea creatures in Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi monster mash-up.

DARK DRAMA

The Knick, 9pm, Sky Atlantic

DR THACKERY (Clive Owen) hits a new low as he raids a pharmacy, and Barrow tries to help — not by curing his addiction, but by finding him drugs. A tolerance for bleakness is required for Steven Soderbergh’s series, but it’s a finely made drama.

WARTIME HEROISM As Close As Brothers, 9pm, PBS America

NEW documentary that tells of the heroism of a Canadian Lancaster gunner who died trying to save a friend trapped in his turret. The casual jollity of the RCAF veterans interviewed about the time is remarkable: ‘I gotta say, it was fun,’ recalls one.

SERIES FINALE

Defiance, 9pm, Syfy

IN THE big, adventurous second season finale, New York is gone — a casualty of the evil sentient supercomputer that is controlling Irisa. Can its terrible plan be stopped without killing her? This episode starts with a global spectacle, like sci-fi, and ends with heart, in a bar — like a western. There will be a third season.

DOCUMENTARY

The Naked Village,g, 9pm,p, More4

THIS initially eye-popping documentary follows life in the naturist village of Spielplatz, near St Albans, as the unclothed community tries to fend off property developers keen to buy up their now very valuable real estate. Less titillating than quietly comical.

FREEVIEW MOVIE Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, 9pm, 5H

ONE of several successful collaborations between the two Kevins, Costner and director Reynolds, this telling of the Sherwood tale is gripping and effective, with Alan Rickman having enormous fun as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham.

DOGGY COMEDY

Puppy Love, 10pm, BBC4

COMEDY is often at its best when characters hit rock bottom, and that happens in this new episode. The victim is Naomi, finely played by Vicki Pepperdine as that odd combination of a person who defines herself by social standing, yet has long forgotten how to actually relate to people. Highlights include the prison, and her drinking session in the bar.
