£140M JAIL WITH TRAPPINGS OF A FIVE-STAR HOTEL
WITH its immaculate interior, state-of-theart gym and sea view, HMP Grampian offers many of the facilities of a five-star hotel.
The 0-acre ‘super jail’, which will house 500 offenders at a cost of £1 0million, even boasts astroturf pitches for the inmates to play football and other sports.
Prisoners will have the opportunity to be groomed at a hair salon with a professional hairdresser.
And the convicted criminals will even have their own safes — in case they are worried about being targeted by thieves.
It may seem like a luxury which most people can only dream of, but the inmates will also have underfloor heating and doubleglazing in their cells.
In the female wing, there are no bars across the windows and the doors have been given pine cladding, as bars were thought to look ‘too intimidating’.
Each cell has a small flat-screen TV with access to 20 Freeview channels and prisoners are allowed to access a vast library of Sky movies. Every wing of the jail has a gym packed with specialist equipment including treadmills and rowing machines.
Inmates will also get the chance to work for a recruitment, employability and telemarketing call centre, in a specially designed wing on prison grounds.
IT is hoped Scotland’s first custom-built community facing prison will help reduce re-offending in the long term.
By providing new fit-for-purpose facilities, prison authorities believe it will maximise the opportunity for prisoners to engage positively to address the underlying causes of their re-offending behaviour.
Describing it as an ‘exciting’ development, Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill hopes it will prove to be a model for future prisons.
