Comedian full of praise for NHS staff

- STAFF REPORTER

Comedian Andy Cameron has praised the NHS staff who cared for him after he had to go A&E with chest pains at 3am last week.

The TV and radio broadcaster said he had to go to the emergency department after suffering a tightening in his chest in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The 82-year-old from Rutherglen had turned up at University Hospital Hairmyres in East Kilbride with chest pain linked to indigestion but said it was later discovered to be a gallbladder issue.

He said that after five hours he was admitted to a ward and then monitored over the next three days.

The funnyman has now praised the care he received from NHS staff who he says, despite being under pressure, were “magnificent”.

Thanking the medics who cared for him on release from hospital on Friday he Tweeted: “Just spent 3 nights in Hairmyres Hospital with a Gallbladder issue. The NHS is under pressure. THEY ARE MAGNIFICENT!”

Speaking to our sister paper the Sunday Mail, he added:“The staff and NHS are under pressure, there is no doubt about that.

“But the staff were wonderful, from the auxiliaries all the way up to the top doctors.

“I went to A&E with pains in my chest I thought was indigestion but when you have a tightness in your chest you worry it’s something worse.

“But they sorted me out right away and monitored my heart.

“They made sure the indigestion was treated.

“It took about five hours as it was really, really busy.

“But they got me into a bed and monitored me for the next few days. “I was then released on Friday. “They couldn’t have been more efficient, nice, friendly and I felt really safe in their hands.

“I can’t thank them enough.” Andy said that his recent experience reminded him of how vital the NHS is and the important roles of its staff who care for patients.

He added: “The NHS doesn’t work without them. What these people do is not a job, it’s a vocation.

“You don’t realise how lucky we are with the NHS until you are in that situation.

“That’s when you see how valuable it is, how important and how vital the NHS and the staff really are.”
