Clyde can be L1 force after Partick scalp

- MARK PIRIE

Midfielder Ross Cunningham reckons Clyde should be targeting the top four in League One after their shock win over Partick Thistle.

The Bully Wee’s clash with Dumbarton last weekend was rained off and they now host Peterhead at Broadwood Stadium.

However, after a surprise victory over the title favourites to kick-off the campaign, Cunningham is confident of a promotion bid.

The 22-year-old, who made a loan move from Hamilton permanent this summer, believes they have a squad to rival anyone in the third tier.

“I was on loan at Clyde last year,”he said.“I knew all about the gaffer and all about the changing room.

“For me it’s probably the best changing room of boys you can be in.

“I think we have a real good squad this season and I think we have shown that with our pre-season and the game against Partick Thistle, where we beat the team who are the league favourites comfortably.

“Probably people will be looking at us as a top six team in League One, but with the squad we have got we should be aiming for the top four defintely.

“If we can win the games against your Peterhead and Dumbarton of the league, where it isn’t as pretty football and you have to battle; if we win those games I don’t see why we can’t be at the top end of the table.

“With the squad we have got we are confident going into any game that we can take points. It just depends how we turn up on the day.”

The midfielder is now loving playing his football permanently under Danny Lennon – after the gaffer finally convinced him to come to the club.

“Danny is great to work under,”he added.“He has tried to get me a few times and he puts a lot of trust in me.

“He sees me as a leader and one of the main players in the team.

“That is what every player wants. You feel confident going out onto the pitch knowing that your gaffer trusts you to do a job for the team.”

He now hopes to build an impressive goals and assists tally, and learn from veterans at Clyde like skipper David Goodwillie.

“David Goodwillie is a massive player to play with,”continued Cunningham.

“He has the experience. He has been there and done it at the highest level.

“For me, I’m like a sponge, I just watch and learn. How he takes the ball, how he moves his body, his touches, everything.

“He is great to learn off and he isn’t a negative captain.

“He been brilliant for me here.”
