Crocked Duncan will miss Six Nations

- Kenny Smith

Cambuslang man Duncan Weir has been ruled out of this season’s Six Nations rugby campaign for Scotland.

The former Cathkin High pupil was an ever-present in the side last season, with the fly-half memorably scoring a long-distance drop goal to give Scotland victory over Italy in Rome.

But unfortunately, the 23year-old ex-Cambuslang player will miss out on this year’s fixtures, meaning he won’t add to his haul of 18 international caps to date.

The injury happened during Glasgow Warriors’ win over Edinburgh last month.

Duncan told the Reformer: “I’d come off the bench against Tolouse and had made a decent impact, so I started the next game against Edinburgh.

“Then I got the injury with five minutes to go, but I played on till the end.

“Myself and the club decided not to release anything about it as we didn’t know if I’d need surgery or rehab.

“After seeing a couple of specialists, they referred me on to have an operation to get it fixed properly.”

Duncan’s injury is an unusual one, as it will require the surgeon to put tendons back in the correct place.

He said: “It’s a pretty unusual one, but we’ve had three of these at the club in the last year - and the Scotland doctor James Robb said he’d only ever seen one like this before!”

Although he will miss the Six Nations campaign, Duncan has his sights set on returning before the end of the season.

He said: “Fingers crossed, that’s my target.”
