Liam named Lancs skipper
CRICKET CHRIS OSTICK LIAM Livingstone is the new Lancashire captain, with Steven Croft being relieved of the role.
Head coach Glen Chapple has decided to make the change after Croft struggled for form this summer, at times being left out of the Specsavers County Championship side.
Livingstone, who is just 24, has little captaincy experience but led the side when Croft was out injured at the start of last season.
But he is without doubt a rising star in the side, having averaged more than 50 after moving up to No.3 last season and making his England T20 debut.
“It is a huge honour to be named Lancashire captain,” said Livingstone, who came through the club’s Academy and only made his first-team debut in 2015. “I feel privileged, humbled and, most of all, hugely excited by this opportunity.
“I thoroughly enjoyed captaining the side for a short period earlier this year and I can’t wait to lead the Red Rose out again.
“It’s a very proud day for myself and also my friends and family who have supported me all the way throughout my career. Steven has left the team in a strong position and to follow in the footsteps of some of the great Lancashire captains of the past is a dream come true for me.”
Lancashire had several options for the role, especially with the arrival of England Lions skipper Keaton Jennings and the experienced Graham Onions. But Chapple says Livingstone has been a captain in waiting.
“Liam has been seen as a potential leader as he has developed through the Lancashire cricket system,” said the Red Rose head coach. “He showed maturity in the role, without it affecting his form when he captained the side earlier in the season, and he commands the respect of the dressing room.”
Croft has been in the job for the last two seasons, and also led the side for most of 2015 following the careerending injury to then skipper Tom Smith.
That season, he captained them to their first NatWest T20 Blast title and promotion to Division One. Lancs finished runners-up last season, however, the side has disappointed in one-day cricket since then, and this year Croft has struggled for runs and faced a battle to keep his place.
