Cricket Club’s act of kindness recognised

-

A KINDNESS shown years ago by Norden Cricket Club has been recognised in the will of a Rochdale lady.

When the Rochdale Golf clubhouse was virtually destroyed by fire the Cricket Club allowed the use of its facilities to the Golf Club members. Among those members were Fred and Mary Bottomley and Ray Farrell who enjoyed games of bridge in the cricket club.

Fred died in 2009, and Mary passed on in December 2017.

Ray was Executor of the estate of the late Mary and on Tuesday night he handed a cheque for £10,000 to cricket club chairman Stuart Hunt.

He said: “The kindness which was shown towards members of Rochdale Golf Club after our clubhouse was burned down some years ago has not been forgotten.

“We would like the money to be used for the development of amateur cricket at the various age group levels within the club.”

Club chairman Stuart Hunt said: “It has not been decided how to spend the money, but I can assure Ray that there will be some form of recognition in memory of Mary and Fred somewhere noticeable on the ground, and Ray will be invited to come and see what the money has been used for.”

Mrs Bottomley left £100,000 to Springhill Hospice and other amounts went to Grace’s Place – a Bury based children’s hospice which caters for families – Rochdale Golf Club, Rochdale RUFC, and Rochdale Mayfield.
