Fusiliers go on march to mark golden years
THE 50th anniversary of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers was marked with a day of celebrations and a parade through Rochdale town centre.
Hundreds of people lined the streets to see Fusiliers, veterans and cadets march down Yorkshire Street to the cenotaph where a march past and salute took place. Afterwards a reception was held at the town hall where members of the armed forces, veterans and their families gathered to reminisce and reflect.
Dignitaries at Saturday’s event included the Mayor of Rochdale Coun Ian Duckworth, local councillors and MPs Tony Lloyd and Liz McInnes.
It was proud day for Fusiliers past and present who have served the regiment with distinction over the last half century.
Local links go back even further, with the Lancashire Fusiliers having a proud 280 year history before it was amalgamated with other regiments in 1968.
The parade was one of a number taking place across the country to celebrate half a century of successful service.
Fusiliers have provided vital support for major conflicts throughout its history, including in the Balkans, the Gulf War and in Afghanistan.
Caen Matthews, armed forces officer for Rochdale council, said: “The borough of Rochdale has proud and historic links with the Fusiliers so it was an important day for members of the armed forces community and their family and friends.
“It was great to see people of all ages watching the spectacle of the parade through Rochdale. We never forget those, past and present, who have served this revered regiment with such honour and distinction. Thanks to everyone who made it a day to remember.”
Major Algy Cole, of the Fusiliers Regiment, said: “The regiment was delighted to be allowed to hold a freedom parade in Rochdale in our 50th Anniversary year. Rochdale has always been a firm friend and supporter of the Fusiliers and we knew we would be well received. Saturday’s reception by the public and the council amply demonstrated that. Our general described it as ‘a cracking weekend’ and I fully agree.
