New mayor ‘can’t wait to get started’ on his civic year
COUN Mohammed Zaman has been nominated as Mayor of Rochdale for the 2018/19 municipal year.
The decision was taken at last Wednesday’s full council meeting at Rochdale Town Hall.
Coun Zaman, who has represented the Milkstone and Deeplish ward since 2011, currently serves as Deputy Mayor of Rochdale.
He said: “I am proud to have been appointed Mayor of Rochdale. I am really looking forward to making a positive difference, supporting our many diverse and vibrant communities.
“It is a real honour to be following in the footsteps of so many great mayors. I can’t wait to get started, working with voluntary and community organisations across the borough. Thanks to everyone who has put their trust in me.”
The new Deputy Mayor of Rochdale will be Coun Billy Sheerin, who has represented the Castleton ward since 2012, and is currently assistant cabinet member for adult care.
He said: “I am really humbled to have been nominated for this important civic position. I will do my very best to support the work of the Mayor.
“A huge thanks for the many kind words and good wishes I have had since my appointment.”
The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor will take up their positions following a mayor making ceremony, at the town hall in May.
