Commuters are taking longer to get to work

HE average time it takes people to commute to work has increased sharply in parts of Greater Manchester.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal in Bury the time it took people to get to work on average rose from 25 minutes each way in 2015 to 34 minutes a year later - 36 per cent longer, and one of the biggest increases that was seen in the UK.

In Oldham, the average commute was 20pc longer in 2016 than it was the year before, rising from 25 minutes to half an hour.

Meanwhile, Manchester itself only saw a minor increase, with the average commute taking 29 minutes in 2016 - up from 28 the year before.

The average commuter in the region took 30 minutes to travel to work in 2016 - the latest figures available.

That’s up from 28 minutes in 2015.

Nationally, the average time that it takes people to travel between their home and work stayed the same between 2015 and 2016, at 27 minutes.

Some parts of Greater Manchester did see decreases, however.

In Wigan the average commute fell from 26 minutes to 25, while in Salford it dropped from 31 minutes to 28.

People in Stockport and Trafford are the only commuters in Greater Manchester who are more likely to walk to work than take a train, tram, bus or coach.

People in Manchester are the most likely to take a taxi.
