BOY, 12, DIES IN QUARRY BIKE PLUNGE TRAGEDY
THE 12-year-old boy who died at a Whitworth moto-cross circuit was described by his family as having a love for life.
Logan Wood died from a suspected heart attack after falling from his motorbike at the outdoor adventure site at Cowm Quarry. Police are now investigating the tragedy and have taken Logan’s motorbike away for forensic examination.
Logan, from Oswaldtwistle, was taken to Fairfield General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday.
In a statement Logan’s family said: “He was tragically taken from us doing what he loved the most, riding his motorbike.”
It is the second fatal incident at the quarry since the death of 16-year-old Matthew Entwistle there in 2006.
A12-YEAR-OLD boy killed in a motorbike accident has been described by his family as ‘a cheeky little monkey, with a love of life’.
Logan Wood died after falling from his motorbike at Cowm Quarry near Whitworth on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mt Carmel RC High School pupil, from Oswaldtwistle, is believed to have suffered a heart attack following the accident and died at Fairfield hospital.
In a statement his family said: “Our cheeky little monkey will always be remembered for his courage, wit, sense of humour, his love of life and all its adventures.
“He was tragically taken from us doing what he loved the most, riding his motorbike.
“He was a real outdoors boy and loved playing cricket for Oswaldtwistle and Church cricket clubs and football for school.
“If he wasn’t playing sport he would be out on his BMX or scooter showing off the tricks he could do. A real adrenaline junkie.
“He was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
Police are investigating and have seized Logan’s motorbike for forensic examination.
It is the second fatal accident at the quarry. In 2006 Matthew Entwistle, 16, died of multiple injuries when he was thrown from his 125cc bike and fell 50ft into a ravine.
Cowm Leisure Ltd, the company which runs the off-road track, was taken to court in a Rossendale council prosecution and later pleaded guilty to failure to discharge a duty of care at the site.
The owners were fined £3,500, although Rossendale council were also criticised by the judge for failing to carry out monitoring checks.
Rossendale council confirmed they were working with police on the investigation into Logan’s death, but declined to comment on the monitoring procedures which were in place at the quarry.
A spokesperson said: “Our sympathies are with the boy’s family and friends at this tragic time.”
Cowm Leisure owner John Whittle declined to comment when contacted by The Observer.
An Enduro event due to take place at the track this weekend has been cancelled following the accident.
Phil Sykes, chairman of Church and Oswaldtwistle Cricket Club said: “We are all very shocked to hear the news, our thoughts are with his parents and those that were close to him.
“Logan loved his cricket, he played for our under 13s junior team.
“My heart goes out to those that were close to him.”
A post-mortem examination is yet to take place.
