Italian Lakes vs Lake District

Valleys, hills and a huge canopy of sky, all reflected in tranquil lakes, tumbling waterfalls and gentle streams; the Lake District never fails to enthrall. Here you can scale England’s tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, or ponder the depths of our deepest natural lake, Wastwater. Feast your eyes on the vastness of Windermere, then gaze across miles of sweeping fells.

Great lakes

There’s breathtaking beauty around every twist and turn in the Lake District National Park, with each new vista thrilling the soul and refreshing even the most jaded traveller. You can also nourish the body, with local delicacies that include Herdwick lamb and Cumberland sausages, Ullswater’s sticky toffee pudding and that famous staple, Kendal mint cake. On the Continent, the Italian Lakes also offer great natural beauty, enhanced with some added celebrity status – George Clooney, Donatella Versace and Madonna are all said to have, or have had, homes here, while the area has been the glamorous backdrop to many movies. This area of Lombardy offers a choice of famous names of its own, including Lake Garda and Lake Como, to charm and beguile the visitor. But ciao Italia, we’re with Wordsworth and heading to Cumbria to wander “lonely as a cloud, that floats on high o’er vales and hills”.

Where to stay

There are lots of really great campsites to choose from, all over the Lake District, but if you want to stay somewhere that’s close to the water’s edge, try Park Foot Caravan and Camping Park, right on the shores of Ullswater. Web parkfootullswater.co.uk
