Lane closed after asbestos and other rubbish dumped
Illegally tipped waste includes dangerous roof sheets and tiles
A SPECIALIST removal firm has been called in to clear up a country lane linking Havant and Rowlands Castle after it was blocked by an illegallydumped pile of waste.
Shocking pictures show buckets, bin bags, stacks of wood and a child’s scooter among the rubbish fly-tipped in Prospect Lane yesterday.
The heap also contains dangerous asbestos roofing sheets, which must be cleared before East Hampshire District Council can investigate the rest.
Prospect Lane, linking Wakefords Way and Whichers Gate Road, is closed while the incident is dealt with.
A council spokesman said: ‘As there is asbestos present in the tip, a specialist company has been called in to clear it.
‘Once that has happened we will be able to investigate the remaining waste.’
The authority shared its own pictures of the waste in a bid to track down its original owner and find out who dumped it.
Garden furniture, old tiles, an interior wooden door and a yellow toy truck are also nestled in the pile, which has angered social media users.
Sharing his own images, Michael Collins said on Facebook: ‘Prospect Lane this morning. So what do scum of the earth do with asbestos and the rest of their rubbish?
‘Well you just tip it in the middle of the road and drive off – causing inconvenience to local people and the taxpayers to foot the bill.’
Sue Ellis added: ‘It’s bad enough fly-tipping, but to dump it in the middle of a road is inconceivable. What morons.’
It is understood a private landowner will be installing CCTV cameras in the area this weekend, following previous reports of fly-tipping.
The district council added: ‘Do you know anything about this fly-tip?
‘Perhaps you have noticed suspicious activity in the area or recognise some of the items.
‘If you do, please contact neighourhood.quality@easthants.gov.uk as soon as possible. Your information will help us find who has done this and bring them to justice.’
Fly-tipping is a crime which can carry a fine of up to £50,000 or a year in prison, if convicted in a magistrates’ court.
It can carry a five-year jail term if convicted in a crown court.
