Morgan: It is not panic stations for us just yet

-

ENGLAND captain Eoin Morgan has shrugged off the injury concerns over himself and Jason Roy.

However, the skipper has admitted he is a doubt to face Afghanistan in the host nation’s next ICC World Cup group clash at Old Trafford tomorrow.

Morgan limped out of Friday’s eight-wicket win over the West Indies at the Ageas Bowl with a back spasm.

He left the field in the 41st over, joining hamstring victim Roy on the treatment table.

Neither player batted as an unbeaten ton from emergency opener Joe Root helped the hosts breeze to glory.

Morgan, inset ,hashad back spasms before and expects it to calm down quickly.

Roy, meanwhile, will sweat on the results of a scanashebids to build on the brilliant century he struck against Bangladesh last time he batted.

Morgan said: ‘It is sore. I have had back spasms before and it normally takes a few days to settle down.

‘When any two players go downitisabitof aworrybut it is not panic stations yet.

‘If it settles down then the improvement is there straight away.

‘Like everybody, we have to see how it pulls up.

‘We will see how risky it is and do a risk assessment going into the game against Afghanistan.

‘We will also bear in mind we have two games in the space of a few days.’

England bowled the West Indiesoutfor212.

They then shrugged off the loss of the two frontline batsman to win at a canter – with Root (100 not out), Jonny Bairstow (45) and Chris Woakes (40) all weighing in.

Morgan believes it showed their strength in depth, something which may be key if thepairareruledoutfora length spell.

‘Strength in depth is something we have worked on,’ said the skipper.

‘This is a very good example of that and another would be last year against Australia in Sydney – when Liam Plunkett went down in the first over he bowled.’

England will kick on from Old Trafford to play Sri Lanka at Headingley on Friday.
