No Need for selfish parking on city road

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

A Perth street has become the centre of concern for nearby residents as droves of vehicles continually park on double yellow lines.

The concerns on Needless Road are that the build up of cars and vans along the street are causing unnecessary congestion, as well as difficulty entering and exiting the junction to Darnhall Road.

One resident called for bollards to be placed on sections of the pavement to deter people parking there, and for wardens to patrol the area more frequently.

Perth City South ward councillor Willie Wilson conceded that parking on the street has become an issue, and that a wider program to lower the speed limit to 20mph in the Craigie area is being looked at.

He said: “Parking in Needless Road is a real issue, this due to a number of reasons.

“There is some parking by daily commuters. In addition many local residents there park in the street.

“Recently commercial vans are parked there and this adds to the pressure of space.

“Solutions are more difficult. I have already written to some firms asking that commercial vehicles not to be parked in the street.

“In addition Needless Road is included in the Craigie area as part of residents parking initiative taken by the council.

“I am keen to promote a 20mph zone to cover this area, [as] there is speeding.”

In response, a Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson said: “Although there are currently no charges for on street parking or in Perth and Kinross car parks, all other parking restrictions still apply.

“Parking attendants will be carrying out patrols and will issue penalty notices where infringements take place.”
