Doig delighted to play key role in victory

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Luncarty forward Richard Doig was delighted to play his part in bagging new manager Robbie Holden a debut win last Saturday.

The experienced striker came off the bench when the Bleachers were one down against Kirriemuir but netted to help carve out a 3-1 victory at Brownlands Park.

He said:“We were delighted to get the win, especially with the new manager coming in.

“Jon (Kelly) has been the only gaffer we have had since the club came out of abeyance and sometimes a change takes time.

“So we were buzzing to get off to a good start. There’s been a real buzz about training since Robbie came in.

“He has his own ideas that he is implementing and a vision for the club that I’m sure will only make it better.

“We have been very unlucky this season in certain games where we have had the better of the play but nothing to show for it. For a while it looked that way again.

“But fair play to the lads, we dug deep on a heavy park and did well to come back. We deserved the win.”

Luncarty head for Aberdeenshire on Saturday to take on Culter in the Quest Engineering Cup.

“The Culter game is a fixture that we have been keeping an eye out for,”Doig said.

“The next few weeks are a mix of league and cup so we just have to keep the same focus regardless of opposition. It will be a tough test but we will be well prepared and confident of going up there and getting into the next round.”

Boss Holden said: “I’m looking forward to a good trip up to Aberdeen against one of the big names in that region.

“We are focused on getting up the table but I would love to get a run in the remaining cups and there is an opportunity here to do that.

“We have had reports on them and I expect them to be a physical side. They have an impressive home record this year and haven’t lost there in the league.”

On the squad front he added:“We will be down one this week as the trialist we had in won’t be included.

“Other than that, as it stands, we should have the same squad available as last week.”

Scone Thistle are in East Region League Cup action on Saturday and face a trip to Broughty Athletic.
