Mark is a safe pair of hands

But Swifts shotstopper credits team for help with shutout rate

Goalkeeper Mark Mitchell has only conceded four league goals this season in what has been a dream start to life in senior football. Mark Mitchell heaped praise on team-mates

well and you always can’t wait for the next game.

“There was a buzz at the start of the season and even more so now.

“People are actually believing that we can go and win the league now.

“At the start of the season top four was probably the target because, going into the unknown, you didn’t know what teams you were coming up against.

“But now we’re certainly holding our own against all the bigger teams in the league, so I don’t see why we can’t go on and win it.”

Mitchell’s latest shutout came in last week’s top of the table clash against Broxburn Athletic, which Swifts won 2-0.

“I wouldn’t say the Broxburn game was a must-win but you certainly don’t want to lose any more ground,” explained Mitchell.

“We were one point behind them before Saturday and going four behind would have been hard to claw back, especially having to go down to their park.

“We deserved to win the game and it was a perfect start for Scott and Fraser Smith.

“They both came off the bench and it shows how strong the squad is.

“Connor McLaren was flying in the first half but had to go off after around half an hour.

“Scott came on and it didn’t change how we played.”

Now attention turns to this weekend’s home game against Heriot Watt University.

Mitchell told the PA: “We played Heriot Watt at their place and it was 3-1, but it took us until the last 15 minutes to break them down. It was 1-1 for long enough.

“They are a very fit, hard-working and well-drilled team but we just kept chapping away. We know it’ll be a tough game.

“The gaffer has said that there’s no point in winning against Broxburn on Saturday if we’re going to drop points this week coming.”

Meanwhile, Jeanfield president Iain Armitt has stepped down from his role at the club.

A Swifts spokesperson said: “The club would like to thank Iain for all of his work in over 60 years of service and wish him all the best in the future.”

Kick-off at the Riverside is at the earlier time of 1.30pm on Saturday and all support is welcome.
