Young Phoenix team book final spot

-

Perth Phoenix’s under-16 girls’ basketball team will enter the New Year with a spring in their step.

The talented Fair City squad has been celebrating booking a place in the final of the Scottish Cup after defeating Knights Fury Central 69-56.

It’s the third time in as many years that the team has made it to the showdown match, much to the delight of proud coach Russel Kesson.

He said:“We were never behind in the game but it should have been more comfortable.

“We had a 20-point lead at one point but they shut it back down in the last quarter and put us under a little bit of pressure.

“But the girls did what they needed to do to get over the line first and that is what counts.

“This is their third year in a row getting to the final.

“They don’t celebrate like it’s their first anymore but are still delighted to be there.”

game to be played at the beginning of February.

Russel added:“Having been in the final before we know what to expect.

“Lady Rocks actually beat us in the final last year so it’s nice to get the chance to play them again.

“We have plenty of league games to be played until that point and the girls have won nine out of nine so far.

“We picked up four players this year from other clubs and have a big playing pool to choose from – around 30.

“There are kids who have played for Scotland and Great Britain down to those who have just started playing league basketball for the first time.”
