Saints ace gutted he couldn’t equalise late on

- Matthew Gallagher

Leigh Griffiths slots under Scott Tanser to net the winner St Johnstone ................. 0 Celtic ............................ 1 Jason Kerr wasn’t expecting to have the best of sleeps on Wednesday night after admitting he should have levelled against Celtic in stoppage time.

The St Johnstone centre-half can’t fathom why he didn’t throw himself at a late Joe Shaughnessy knock down with the goal at his mercy.

It was a chance created in the dying seconds of a Betfred Cup quarter-final tie where Leigh Griffiths had given the visitors the lead in the 84th minute.

Perth players had battled admirably, helped by a terrific performance from stopper Zander Clark, to remain in the game until the death.

Kerr was gutted to exit the competition and was replaying the last ditch opportunity over and over in his head.

He said: “I felt we did enough to get something from the game. I’ve had the chance at the end and we had a couple of more chances with Blair.

“I said to all of the boys that I should score. I let it run past me and thought that I’ve got another touch, but it’s skimmed away.

“I should’ve lunged at the ball and scored. The goalie came out and I’ve gambled on Joe heading it across.

“I don’t know why I’ve not scored and it’s one of those ones that’s going to keep you up at night.

“Everyone wrote us off for the Celtic game. But we stayed in the game, played well and in the end we could’ve progressed.”

Remaining resolute in the second half
