Perthshire has its say on Scotland

Residents pick highs and lows of Scottish life

- Ross Gardiner

Residents in Perthshire have picked their favourite - and least favourite - things about living in Scotland.

A YouGov survey of mid-Scotland and Fife revealed people think the stunning scenery is the best thing about the country.

And unsurprisingly, most people’s biggest gripe about the area is the weather, with Perth recently named as the UK’s coldest city.

The survey comes as part of the National Trust for Scotland’s For the Love of Scotland campaign which asks people both what they love and hate about the country.

Over 40 per cent of people across Perth and Kinross, Fife and Stirling cited the country’s landscapes as their number one love in Scotland, while 23 per cent claimed it to be the people and three per cent the banter.

The country’s history and heritage was voted as the number one love by 15 per cent, with it’s stunning coastlines chosen by seven per cent.

The weather, as you may have predicted, came out tops as the region’s most hated thing about Scotland with 18 per cent citing it.

Potholes, a hugely controversial issue in Perth and Kinross, sunk into the number two spot on the most hated list with 15 per cent, while dark winters appeared at number three on 11 per cent and midges came in at nine per cent. And although there is clearly love for their fellow countrymen, some are not impressed when “taps aff ” season arrives with four per cent of people claiming to hate it most about he country.

Mark Bishop, director of customer and cause at the National Trust for Scotland, said: “It didn’t come as a huge surprise to us to see the country’s breathtaking landscapes and our history and heritage as some of the most loved things about Scotland and that’s exactly why the work we do in caring for some of Scotland’s most significant natural and cultural heritage is so crucial.

“Our new campaign has certainly stimulated plenty of debate around our loves and hates for Scotland, but above all, it’s making people appreciate what makes Scotland Scotland and celebrate the work that we do to protect our country for generations to come.”
