Prizegiving honours top Perth College students

- Iain Howie

Award sponsor Megan Nairn, Principal Margaret Munckton, award sponsor Nicolas Morris, keynote speaker Ann Gloag and award sponsor John Douglas with prizewinners Michael Wood and Karlianne Ritchie Outstanding students who raised the bar for achievement at Perth College have been recognised and celebrated during a special prizegiving ceremony.

More than 90 students received prizes in honour of their exceptional success at the college, watched by Principal Margaret Munckton and keynote speaker Ann Gloag.

Ms Munckton said: “Our prizegiving ceremony is a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge our students’ hard work, effort and commitment. Success doesn’t happen overnight and these awards celebrate our prizewinners’ determination to gain the skills and knowledge that they require in their professions.

“We know our students have been well-supported to succeed by their families and friends, our dedicated staff and in many cases, through their individual sponsors and employers. It’s an honour to play a part in our students’ life journey and I wish our prizewinners congratulations and all the very best for the future.”

Michael Wood (29) from Perth was among the award winners. He took the shield for academic achievement in engineering. He enrolled on the NQ Basic Engineering Skills after deciding to embark on an engineering career.

He said: “The thing I like most about college has been meeting like-minded people on my course and making the most of the hands-on nature of the course.

“I’ve managed to complete all the core skills at level 6 despite coming to college with zero academic qualifications. The course has provided me with skills that already make me infinitely more employable. However, more importantly, has provided me with a helpful step towards higher education. I plan to progress further into the realms of engineering by following the degree path.

“Coming back to college as an older student was the best decision. It’s made me realise my potential and inspired me to enjoy learning again. I’m really delighted to have been recognised by my lecturers who put me forward for this award.”

And Karlianne Ritchie, who studied MA Level 3 Professional Cookery, won Perth College’s apprentice of the year award.

She said: “I am 33 and currently working at Jamesfield Farmshop and Restaurant in Abernethy. I was initially employed as a kitchen assistant but showed a keen interest in everything that went on in the kitchen.

“I previously had my own bakers, where I bought in and sold goods such as cakes and pies. It was successful and a popular wee shop. However, due to the financial climate at the time, I just couldn’t afford to keep it open and raise a family at the same time. I was unemployed for a short period of a month until I started at Jamesfield Farmshop and Restaurant.” The full list of winners were: Social and Vocational Studies Leadership Skills Award, Robert Tarrega; The Proctor Group Award for Employability, Andy Vannet; Personal Achievement Award, Shannan Gourlay; Eileen Robinson Cup for Personal Endeavour, Liam McLeish; Communication Cup, Marisa Dunnett; The Mark Taylor Shield for Independence, Alana Green; Janet Martin Award for Supporting Others, Gemma Baker; Student Support Award, Lucy Stewart.
