Church Home-start is a family support charity covering the whole of Perthshire. It recruits, trains and supports volunteers to help families with young children. All kinds of families can find it hard to cope for all sorts of reasons, due to mental or physical illness, disability of a child or parent, or because of a parent’s post-natal depression, bereavement or isolation. The charity supports any parent with at least one child under the age of five. At Home-start Perth believe that parents have the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It’s just that sometimes they need a bit of help. That’s where the volunteers step in. As a home visiting volunteer you will visit a family for two hours per week in their own homes, offering whatever supports they may need; someone to listen, support to integrate in the local community which in turn will reduce isolation, helping solve problems that parents can’t face alone. It’s what makes Home-start Perth unique – it can offer exactly what the family needs, increasing their confidence and building better lives for their children. As a volunteer you will receive full training, and support is offered from coordinators throughout your time with Home-start. Volunteers, like the families, come from all walks of life. If interested, the next volunteer prep course starts on Thursday, February 23, and will be held in their offices in Highland House, Perth. Applications are invited from anywhere in Perthshire. The course runs for six consecutive Thursdays, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, covering everything you will need to become a home visiting volunteer. them. The kittens who were removed from the house had parasites and chlamydia which affected their eyes. The four white kittens stayed with Sue for two and half weeks until they were on the mend and are now with the sanctuary’s Spanish kitten fosterers. Two have already been booked into a new home and the other two should be snapped up soon. Because the cats and kittens do not always come to the sanctuary in perfect health, they offer a 10 day guarantee on adoption, during which time the adopted animal can be taken to their own vet for treatment (paid for) or returned to Whinnybank. Their aim is always for both the animals and their new owners to be happy. Thanks go to Newburgh rowing club for their kind donation of books and toys. If you can offer a home to a cat, help at fundraising events, in the shops or at the sanctuary, please call Sue on 01337 840414, or visit at www.catchat. org/adoption/fife.html or www.whinnybank.org.uk.

their friendly between Jeanfield Swifts 2 Vale 2. The team were Thain, Berry, Taylor, Young, Crowe, Robinson, Houston, Robertson, Millar, McLauchlan, Thorne, Scrimgeour and Crawford. Vale went ahead with this friendly despite a number of players being absent. The hosts had the better of the early moments as Vale players got used to strange positions and playing partners. Keeper Thain had only one save to make in this period as the defence kept them at bay for the most part. Vale got the breakthrough when Graeme Millar played a good diagonal pass for Glenn Robinson to run onto and shoot home from 10 yards. Jeanfield drew level with a good header from a cross from the left. Sean McLauchlan then hit the bar for Vale and Robinson again got clear, only to be fouled in the box with the referee not convinced. The home side went ahead and it was again a cross. This time a corner was headed home despite Thain clutching the ball, the well placed referee decided that it had gone over the line. Half time the score was 2-1. The second period was evenly matched with both defences on top. Thorne, Crawford and Scrimgeour replaced Robertson, McLauchlan and Millar. Robbie Thorne almost drew level, but his shot just cleared the bar. Terry Young went closer, his free kick from 30 yards came back off the bar with the keeper beaten, with no takers for the rebound. Vale were getting on top as Crawford and Houston controlled the centre. Jeanfield almost got a third, but Thain was equal to the situation. As the game neared the end, Young’s pass saw Robinson win the race with the keeper to roll the ball into the empty net for 2-2. A worthwhile exercise for Vale, quite a few of the squad had to play out of position but they all got plus points. The defence had an excellent game. Robinson and Houston caught the eye in midfield, Sean Mclauchlan did a brilliant job of leading the line and was unlucky not to score. Man of the match was Terry Young for his great game in defence. Tomorrow Vale entertain Breadalbane at the Recreation Park in a cup tie with a 2pm start.
