Anger at sewer pipe ‘mess’ at wildlife site

Action plan for repairing damage at biodiversity area

- Craig Angus

A Perth councillor says severe damage at a Fair City biodiversity site is extremely concerning.

City South ward member Willie Wilson says the site is a both a key part of local flood defences in the Cherrybank and Craigie area and a haven for wildlife.

And the Liberal Democrat elected representative stressed damage caused by the installation of sewer pipe, designed to serve the new housing on the south side of the Glasgow Road, has made a “terrible mess” of the pond area.

Councillor Wilson told the PA: “The main purpose of the site is to provide a flood attenuation pond and is a key part of the flood defences for both Cherrybank and Craigie areas.

“Over the years, the site has developed from a ‘dry pond’ to a fairly marshy area which has self-generated itself in a number of ways.

“A whole variety of wild flowers, including wild orchids, marsh marigolds and irises have populated the area. Frogs have found it a useful place to spawn and ducks are breeding.

“In addition, there’s a whole variety of butterflies and moths who populate the site, as well as a host of wild birds.”

Councillor Wilson said the origin of the damage was caused after a sewer pipe was fitted under the biodiversity site in order to serve a new Bellway Homes development.

He added: “The sewer was installed by drilling a pipe underneath the main Glasgow Road, underneath the biodiversity site and also the Scouring Burn to link into the sewer north of the Scouring Burn and south of Woodlands.

“Installation of the sewer needed a number of manholes to be provided and unfortunately the contractor responsible has made a terrible mess of the pond area in this process.

“I have discussed the matter with officers at the council and also local residents and we have come up with an action plan which we have presented to Bellway Homes to reinstate the site.

“The damage can be repaired but it will take some time. If the correct grass seed and plants are planted early in the Spring, then this will assist the regeneration process a great deal.

“In addition, we have asked for a small pond to be created that will provide an excellent breeding ground for frogs and toads.

“Birch whips are also to be planted on the site which will help provide ground cover for birds and small animals.

“I am very angry that this damage has been caused in the first place but I hope that Bellway will come up with their action plan soon so that we can reinstate the area.

“Within a year or two I hope this site can provide a haven for biodiversity and wildlife again in the future.”

The PA contacted Bellway Homes for comment but received no response.
