Keeping it clean for NHS heroes

- RON MOORE

NHS heroes working marathon shifts during the Covid-19 crisis are being offered a free washing service by a kindhearted dry cleaner.

Adil Khan, 31, owner of Harrods’ Dry Cleaners, has launched a wash and delivery service for frontline health workers at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow.

The businessman, who has a shop in Bridge of Weir and an industrial unit based in Paisley, has already started collecting the medics’ clothes from their homes, washing and returning them bagged up once they are cleaned and ready for wear.

He is welcoming NHS staff working in Renfrewshire to make use of his facilities as he understands many hospital staff are working extra shifts during the coronavirus pandemic, and are hard-pressed to attend to household chores.

He said: “Already I have been helping NHS staff by washing and returning their clothes to their doorstep.

“But I want to stress, this is for health service workers only, as the costs are coming directly out of my pocket.

“Thankfully, no one has been taking advantage of the free service, which is designed specifically around health workers, such as doctors, nurses and paramedics, who are working around the clock caring for patients during this stressful time.”

Adil said that he has been helped out by kindhearted Buddies who are offering their help free of charge in picking up and dropping off clothes, such as scrubs, gowns and uniforms.

He said these volunteers aren’t even asking for fuel costs.

He added: “My own passing trade to the shop in Bridge of Weir has fallen off dramatically during the Covid-19 restrictions.

“But I do have the capacity to help and I am very grateful to drivers of vehicles who are getting in touch and offering their help.

“We are organising pick-ups from people’s homes via a time slot that suits NHS staff and will return the clothes also via a time slot.

“It is important we all do our bit to help our NHS staff, who are facing a massive challenge right now and I am just grateful to be of service in any way that I can.”
