BUDDIES CAN BAG A GREAT BARGAIN

IT’S MARKET DAY AT TANNAHILL CENTRE

- ALISON RENNIE

A group has shown teamwork makes the dream work by coming together to put on a new monthly market.

The group came together to join the Self-Reliant Group (SRG) at the Tannahill Centre in Ferguslie Park, Paisley which encouraged people to set up their own businesses.

Run by Bobbie McCabe, the group received training and support and several have gone on to form successful businesses including soap making , photography and ginger wine.

The SRG project has finished but the group still meets regularly to support each other and has now come up with an idea to hold a monthly indoor market at the Tannahill Centre where they can sell their own goods and encourage people to sell on unwanted items.

Andy Jackson, who started making and selling ginger wine and is also training in bee keeping, said: “The whole idea was to build up skills and help each other with business ideas.

“A lot of us have started businesses and developed craft skills.

“We’ve done a lot more as a group than we could ever have done as individuals.

“We came up with the idea of a monthly market in the Tannahill Centre for people to take stalls at. It’s all indoors, there’s a cafe and toilet facilities.”

The group are also keen for people to use the market as a kind of indoor car boot sale and take stall to sell off any of their own unwanted toys, books and clothes.

Laura Cardona set up Soaps by Laura through the SRG. She added: “People can take a stall. They can have a clearout and it gives them the chance to make some money too.”

Andy said: “We did some market research and asked people on the Tannahill Centre Facebook page if they’d like a monthly market. We got 97 per cent of people saying they thought it would be a great idea.

“I’m not sure you’d get 97 per cent of people agreeing the sun would come up every day so we were delighted!

“We hope it will be supported by the community.”

Group member Iris Ballantyne’s dog Buddie inspired the name of the market.

Bobbie now works as a volunteer coordinator at the Tannahill Centre. She said: “The group have taken this on, I’m more of a facilitator now.

“I’m very proud of what they’ve achieved through hard work and determination.

“I’ve seen how they’ve grown in confidence and supported each other which is great.”

The first Every Buddie’s Market takes place this Friday, November 1 in the Tannahill Centre from 10am till 1pm.

There will be another market at the end of the month on Saturday, November 30 to tie in with the Tannahill Centre’s Christmas celebrations. It is on from 3pm till 6pm.

They plan to agree more dates early in the New Year.

Pitches are an introductory price of £5 with all the money made going back into the SRG group’s credit union account. It is free to attend.
