Nursery really is top class
Education inspectors praise pre-five centre
A nursery has been given the thumbs- up by the education watchdog with its senior staff singled out for their great leadership skills.
Education Scotland carried out an inspection at Glendee Pre-Five Centre, in Renfrew, and praised the “highly effective leadership” of the head of the centre, Gillian Kinnear, and depute Elaine Stevenson.
“They successfully encourage shared leadership at all levels across the setting,” the inspection report states.
The nursery, which has a roll of more than 100 and is ran by Renfrewshire Council, has an inclusive, nurturing and respectful ethos, its adds, and it also gave positive mention to the quality of children’s experiences both indoors and outdoors, along with the organisation of the ‘learning zones’ which promote independent learning.
The quality of interactions with children “to support purposeful play” and extend and deepen learning was also mentioned as a strength.
The report adds: “Staff had very good relationships with children and welcomed them individually on arrival.
“They knew children very well, praised their contributions and encouraged them to develop confidence and self esteem.”
However, Education Scotland said Glendee Pre-Five Centre must further develop personal learning profiles so that children can reflect on what they have learned and talk to practitioners about what they might learn next.
The nursery must also continue to develop the tracking of children’s progress to ensure children are making the progress they are capable of.
And it should further develop assessment procedures to ensure they become integral to the planning process.
The inspection report states: “We are confident that the setting has the capacity to continue to improve and so we will make no more visits in connection with this inspection.
“Renfrewshire Council will inform parents/carers about the setting’s progress as part of its arrangements for reporting on the quality of its settings.”
Gillian Kinnear, head of Glendee Pre- Five Centre, said: “We are delighted with the very positive findings of this inspection report which recognises the high quality experiences we provide to the children who come to Glendee Pre-Five Centre.
“Our staff can be very proud of their great work in creating an inclusive, nurturing and respectful environment for the children at Glendee.
“The children have a fun time through play which extends their learning and we also promote independent learning as much as possible.
“Feedback from this inspection will enable us to build on the many positives and improve the service we provide, recognising the vital role we can play in a child’s education.”
