Gary and Cammy are this week’s stars

- St Mirren

Gary MacKenzie has clawed himself back into contention for the Paisley Daily Express Star Saint award with a top performance on Saturday.

The towering defender was in solid form as the Buddies drew with relegation rivals Dumbarton at the weekend. The centre back has been a real rock at the back for the Buddies over the course of the whole season, and his display against the Sons was no less than what the Saints faithful have come to expect from the former Dundee and MK Dons man.

But the talk of the town now is the performance of the Saints against Renfrewshire rivals Morton on Tuesday night. It was difficult to single out one player for the plaudits on a night that St Mirren simply hammered Jim Duffy’s men.

But for our reporter it was on-loan man Cammy Smith who stole the show, with the Aberdeen midfielder looking threatening with each burst up the park. On another day Kyle Magennis, MacKenzie or Rory Loy would have taken the point but at this late stage of the season it is time for Smith’s first point.

Lewis Morgan still leads the way by a point from teammate Stevie Mallan, but with the winger nearing full fitness, the title could yet be his.

Leaderboard: Lewis Morgan (8), Stevie Mallan (7), Gary MacKenzie (6), Kyle McAllister (5), Jack Baird (3), Stephen McGinn (3), Kyle Magennis (2), Billy O’Brien (1), Harry Davis (1), Rory Loy (1), David Clarkson (1), Scott Gallacher (1), Jason Naismith (1), Ryan Hardie (1), Gary Irvine (1), John Sutton (1), Jamie Langfield (1). Cammy Smith (1).
