‘Despicable’ fans have gone bananas
SO why are groups of teenagers wearing suits to the cinema and, secondly, why is it being banned?
It is all due to the long-awaited release of the film Minions: The Rise Of Gru.
The animated movie started a trend where teenagers donned suits in the style of lead character Gru – a former super villain who turns good guy.
They then filmed themselves heading to the cinema to watch the film.
Posting videos on social media app Tiktok, the trend grew and some of the videos have now racked up millions of views.
The groups got larger and the mainly teenage boys, who call themselves The Gentleminions, became rowdier.
Groups were seen celebrating “the five-year wait is over” and some even took bananas to snack on during the screenings, referencing the favourite food of Gru’s cute yellow helpers, called Minions.
As the trend grew so did the ‘celebrations’.
Some of the viral videos show those taking part cheering and clapping loudly and being disruptive during screenings.
Some have been filming the movie screen itself, which could be construed as piracy.
To tackle the trend, many UK cinemas have now enforced a reverse dress code, which bans groups of young people turning up for screenings of the film in suits or smart clothing.
It is not clear where the trend originated, but the #gentleminions videos show suited groups attending the screenings and copying the main character, super villain Felonius Gru, and his signature hand gesture.
But movie studio Universal Pictures, which produced the film, has endorsed the #gentleminions trend, tweeting “to everyone showing up to @ Minions in suits: we see you and we love you”.
