Knights and MPS are threatening all of us
THE Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, recently urged Boris Johnson to drop what he describes as “draconian laws” (Quotes of the day, March 25).
A number of Conservative MPS were again critical at a debate on Thursday of what they see as the Government’s “oppressive” and “draconian” coronavirus legalisation (“Publicans blast jab passport plan”, Post, March 26).
Sir Desmond Swayne MP ran on about “total social control” (in my view a bizarre performance, to put it mildly) and Sir Graham Brady MP on the theme of fundamental civil liberties being taken away.
Have these knights, and other MPS, all forgotten the setbacks we have encountered due in part to locking down late and opening up too soon?
Are they unaware that much of Europe is now experiencing a third wave and of the warnings that we will feel the effects?
Some argued that the vaccine roll-out has been successful. Yes, it has, but there is still some way to go with it and we are now facing a possible supply shortage here in the UK. Then there are the not insignificant number who are declining to have the jab for whatever reason. Are these MPS unaware of all this as well?
If these MPS had their way (which fortunately they did not) their reckless approach could have thrown away our gains.
However, their continuing talk of liberties, freedoms and draconian laws might influence some people to throw caution to the wind in one way or another.
If they are after soundbites then they should make themselves heard by encouraging their constituents and others to follow the rules and guidance. We are not out of the woods yet.
