College students reap success
TWO of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students are celebrating after winning gold and silver medals at an annual competition which showcases the nation’s best, young hairdressing and beauty therapy talent.
21-year-old Beth Evans from Llandudno, and Annabelle Armstrong, 20, from Mochdre, who are studying on Level 3 Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy courses respectively at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea campus, were awarded first and second place in their individual categories at Salon Cymru in Cardiff.
Beth scooped top prize in the ‘Hair-up’ category after a fierce battle against the fourteen other finalists, whilst Annabelle A Grŵp Llandrillo Menai cake decorating student, who last year won a silver medal for her creation at one of the largest cake decorating events in the world, is celebrating after going one better!
Hospitality student Hayley Roberts from Conwy, who is on the final year of her Level 3 Cake Decoration course at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea campus, scooped gold in the ‘Cake Cymru’ competition for her mermaid cake.
She entered the world-renowned ‘Cake International’ competition was awarded silver in the ‘Fantasy Make-up’ category. Beth had only 30 minutes to create her winning creation on her model, Joey Staerkle from Llandudno, who is a Business student at the college.
Annabelle also battled it out against fourteen other finalists, narrowly missing out on gold. She had one and a half hours to create a Game of Thronesthemed style in her category. She said: “This is literally the first thing that I have ever won and the trophy is currently taking pride of place on the family mantelpiece. I now hope to get an apprenticeship in Hairdressing, so that I can widen my skills set, and eventually be a make-up artist to the stars!” at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre in November 2014 with her aquatic creation. She was awarded a silver medal, but undeterred, she spoke to the judges to see how she could improve, and where she had lost marks.
Hayley then made changes, taking into account the judges’ feedback, and entered the cake into the ‘Cake Cymru’ competition, which was held at the Welsh International Culinary Championships. She was awarded a gold medal and also won ‘Best in Show’!
