Four-some Borough back in groove

-

CONWY Borough will have high hopes of making it backto-back wins in the Huws Gray Alliance when they entertain bottom side Rhydymwyn at Y Morfa this Saturday (2.30pm).

Boro roared back to winning ways last weekend with a 4-0 success at Penycae.

Mike Thompson, Leon Williams, Phil Doran and Lee McElmeel shared the goals for Aden Shannon’s side.

It was fine performance from Shannon’s men, who dominated throughout with good passing football and easily could have had more goals.

Shannon said after the match: “Under the difficult conditions it was all about getting a result as three points was massive today.

“From start to finish we were the better team and bossed the game.

“We played a lot of good football and it could have eas- ily ended up seven or eight-nil. We need this level of performance every week now in order to start to climb the table with a lot of big games coming up.”

Shannon also spoke of his decision to give Steve Cunningham the captain’s armband.

“His drive and will to win is incredible. He’s been missing due to injury for a while but its great to finally have him back.”

On the down side, Conwy are likely to be without defenders Phil Clarke and Jack Pickering for a while after both suffered twisted knees.

Shannon added: “I do have some new players coming in now, as we need to strengthen in some areas.”

Last Saturday’s trip to Afoneitha Road saw the visitors build on a good start when they took a 30th-minute lead, Thompson scoring with a looping header.

Doran then released Williams to slot in the second before half time.

Despite injuries to Clarke and Pickering, Boro remained strong and focused and made it 3-0 in the 75th minute.

Doran provided the magic with a great individual effort, in keeping with his recent superb form.

Conwy’s final goal arrived on 86 minutes when Williams’ free kick struck the post with a 25-yard free kick, but there was substitute McElmeel to smash in the rebound.

Shannon also praised unsung hero Jack Graham for another committed display.
